H FOR HAIR – SOLDIERS VOW TO GROW FACIAL HAIR UNTIL H HOUR

YAKUTAT, ALASKA—Although the men at this Alaska base probably won’t participate in any Allied attack on Fortress Europe this summer, a fourth of them are showing their interest in that even by growing goatees, beards and other hair adornments.

“I’m not going to shave my chin until H Hour on D Day,” says Cpl. Leo Quimby, one of the originators of the whisker-whimsy. The officers are tolerant of the vogue, but they’re not participating.

It’s probably just a coincidence, but the whole thing began the week that the movie, “Madame Curie,” was shown at this post. So far, none of the GIs has attained the furry finery of Walter Pigeon as Dr. Curie.
