WHEN JERRY WON’T GIVE UP THEN THE PARTY GETS ROUGH

From the July 24, 1944 Edition of Stars and Stripes

WITH U.S. FORCES IN NORMANDY, July 23 (AP)–Earl Gray, motor corporal from Newsom, Va., believes in giving the enemy a fair chance–unless he wants to play rough.

Gray came across a German tank knocked out by an American tank destroyer. Two of the Nazi crew had been killed but the third kept firing a machine-gun. Creeping closer to the tank, Gray twice yelled to the Jerry to surrender, but each time was met by an answering burst of fire.

So he calmly lobbed a grenade into the turret. That ended the argument.
