A LIBERATOR BASE, July 15–Appointment of Lt. Col. James M. Stewart, of Indiana, Pa., the screen star, as chief of staff of a B24 combat wing was announced yesterday by Maj. Gen. James P. Hodges, commander of an Eighth B24 Division.
Stewart was been serving as a Liberator group operations officer. As chief of staff, he will be second in command to Brig. Gen. Edward J. Timberlake Jr., wing commander.
OLD HANDS IN THE BUSINESS
The experts say it’s a young man’s war, but when the Allies invade Hitler’s Europe the Army will depend, among others, on a gang of middle-aged, weather-beaten, heavy-construction veterans, like 52-year-old M/Sgt. Felix MacDonald, to repair the harbors that the Germans may destroy
I was still flying B-24’s in combat on the date of this Stewart column. In the heat of stepped-up operations, I do not recall reading much about Stewart of Gable as they were busy with combat not seeking publicity. Good guys.
