Shangri-La is Launched by the US Navy

The USS Shangri-La (CV 38) was named after President Franklin Roosevelt’s response to where Jimmy Doolittle’s B-25 bombers were launched from for their April 18, 1942 raid on Japan.
The carrier was launched on February 24, 1944 and was sponsored by Josephine Doolittle, wife of Jimmy Doolittle.
On April 24, 1945, Shangri-La joined Marc Mitschers Task Force 58 and began air operations over Okinawa and other nearby islands. From June to August she conducted air raids on the Japanese home islands of Kyushu, Honshu and Hokkaido.
