“Russian divers in cooperation with the Pacific Fleet sailors have discovered the submarine at a depth of 104 meters,” said Aleksandr Kirillin, secretary of the academic board of Russia’s Military Historical Society. The Russians have notified the US government about the discovery.

The USS Herring was launched on January 5, 1942. She conducted war patrols in waters around North Africa and Iceland before being sent to the Pacific.

On her eighth war patrol, she conducted operations in the Kurile Islands, sinking the Ishigaki and Hokuyo Maru during the night of May 30-31 and the merchant ships, Hiburi Maru and Iwaki Maru on June 1, 1944 while they were at anchor at Matsuwa Island. Herring was sunk by fire from Japanese shore batteries, killing all 83 sailors on board.
